30 June, 2001 at Red Eyed Fly

GUEST MUSICIAN:

NOTES FROM 54 SECONDS: Live at the Red Eyed Fly.  A new club for us.  Nice outdoor stage. Featuring Seth Orell on drums.  The show was videotaped by the Austin Music Network and will probably be broadcast sometime in the fall.

Lots of cool stuff in this show.
Once or twice during the show there is this really cool spacey feedback that occurs. I'm not sure if it's to do with the recording, or  the outdoor setting -- in any case, it sounds really weird & cool!! Plus the audience are really nice, which is always a bonus!

Poppy Seed: Easing into the show with one of my all time favourite songs. Gorgeous cymbal work from Seth. Very smooth!! Beautiful work from the other guys, and then just before the band break, I think something happens with Spencer's mic, as the vocals drop off. Then straight into a flawless guitar solo!!!! Beautiful!

Nashville: Excellent performance! Glenn's freaky bass is nice & prominent. The eerie keys are the star of the song -- Those, mixed with Spencer's sinister vocals, make this one of the coolest songs around!

Sp: "Let's hear it for Seth Orell on drums. He's filling in for tonight. The guy's doing a fucking great job. Let's hear it for him! Let's hear it for Cloudtalk. Let's hear it! Here's a tune called Foolish Me.'

Foolish Me: One of the coolest intros I have heard for this one I think. The tempo this time is slightly up from what they usually do, but it sounds really good!! The dark, pulsing bass line, makes my heart beat to the speed of the song. The vocals are dark & smooth. There is an airy effect from Stew that I don't recall hearing before. Seth is awesome! "Sometimes baby it's the same old thing. You putting me down.". Very nice harmony there. I LOVE this song!!

Sp: "Thank you! (guy in audience screams out "rock me", and Spencer laughs) Thanks for coming man! We're in the middle of recording our new record. That's why we haven't been playing out too much. It's about half to three quarters of the way done. It's sounding really cool. It will be out soon, probably the middle of August. So, you won't be seeing too much of us before then, and then we'll have all new stuff -- but in the meantime, we will be able to play you a couple of things from the record tonight, and this is one of them.

(Something broke - ?)

You Are Not Me: I really love the whole feel of this song. I have been hearing this song since the beginning (I believe it was the very first 54 seconds song ever written), and for a long time it wasn't one of my favourite tunes, but they have changed the vocal melody slightly, and added tons of stuff, and it is just sounding so beautiful, and very surreal, especially in the band break. It's just gorgeous. Spencer's vocals are achingly personal. You just want to hug him. I can not wait to hear this on the new album!!!

Gl: "Spencer sounds.... Spencer sounds German when he says "Cloudtalk". (with accent) Cloudtalk are my idols!"
Sp: "Cloudtalk! Please be seeing Cloudtalk!"
(To me Spencer's German accent sounds Indian <grin>)
Gl: "It's Cloudtalk!"
Sp: "It's like craftwork, but better".
Gl: "You guys are great!"

Jaded: This song always sounds great. I like the guitar effect in the intro. The drums & bass blend perfectly, both bouncing off each other. Flawless vocals from Spencer.  Seth is hammering away, but isn't at all tiny. I always love the keyboard solo in the break. I really like the mix for this performance!

Sp: "If you're just curious to know, we have no projection. No TV's. None of that craziness. It's just raw Austin music, and you know, you know what I'm saying.
(the reverb is cranked, and it's all spacey sounding mixed with trickles of the intro into Early Warning).
GL:" Whoooo...
(Spencer says something dreamy that I can't make out).

Early Warning: Excellent!!!! There are those masculine vocal tones I could just eat up, along with that beautiful bass groove pushing the band along. Actually the vocals are really tight, and blending beautifully.  In the second verse Stewart has this downwards sliding space effect -- I don't know how else to describe it. All I know is, it sounds really cool! :o) I really enjoyed this performance. Ah heck, this is another one that I ALWAYS love.

Sp: "This is called Happy Ending. It's off the new record. (something happens) See, that's what happens!"

Happy Ending: The song I have been waiting to hear for ages. huh? What? This isn't Happy Ending?!?!...lol.. They changed the verse, from when I heard them do it the Speakeasy 2/26 show. In this show, he starts out in a low sexy vocal (same melody as before), but then the 2nd & 3rd lines before the chorus, are slightly different (very nice I might add), before building to the kick-ass chorus. Both versions are excellent!  There is also that really ambient break, just before an awesome guitar solo. yummo! I can't wait to hear the recording!

It Got You Thinking: Beautiful clear piano chords. I love what they have been doing to this lately (with the more prominent piano). Nice bass drum, silky smooth bassline, and shivering guitars. The song that started it all for me, and I am loving it more now than I ever did. Beautiful vocal/harmonies. Tiny bit of feedback. Hammering keys. What I really love about this song is the bass that catches my heart throughout. It's so beautiful. Really beautiful! The mix for this show is really good considering it is an outdoor concert and all. Excellent guitar solo! Stewart drags Spen back into the chorus with a flashy glisé. One of newer additions to this song since way back, are the classical keys in psychedelic chords, mixing with really classic rock guitar solo. I LOVE those chords!!!

Sp: "Thank you. We've got time for a couple more for you. Thanks a lot for being here. We'll be back real soon, I promise."

Sell it to a Girl: Mmm... Mmmm...  Stewart sets the mood with soft, airy sounds. The drums kick in to establish a nice groove. Stewart with all his elegance, sashes in with those dreamy keys (or should that be "eargasmic" keys. Yep!) Spencer has a beautiful effect happening. It sounds like birds in a rainforest, with Glenn's bass acting as the mist. Very beautiful indeed. Then it swings into the familiar melody. There's that beautiful organ work melding with Spencer's vocals. I live for his vocals in this song.  He really shows his range and style. On a couple of lines, throughout this show, Spencer has been a very bad boy, by occasionally leaving Stewart hanging with his harmony. Shame, shame! ...lol... Three quarters of the way through the song, it hits a full on jazz jam with scatting vocals, and brilliant solos flying everywhere. I love those tantalizing keys under Spencer's moans. Yowee!!! A rock me baby scream leaves me wiping away the drool. Seth is excellent. Glenn is ...my bass baby.... Stewart takes the song out with a Bill Evans style tickle.

(oops... someone smashes something)
Gl: "I'm so embarrassed"
Sp: "Here's a tune called Wanted".

Wanted: Stewart is playing a gorgeous melody under Spencer's lead guitar. I've never heard that before, and I love it! Spencer's vocals are heart-wrenching. There's those keys again under the most gorgeous solo I have heard Spencer play a while. The whole band really melds in this song. Stewart's crescendo taking us into the last chorus. As with It Got You Thinking, the piano arrangement in this song has grown more prominent, and I LOVE it!!!

Gl: "Thank you. Good night. We're called Jeff Klein!"
