This is the band that gave webmaster Randy Daniels
the idea to build a Colorful Music Community. That is one of the many reasons
why 54 Seconds is the only band in our short history to not only be the featured
artist of the month, but the featured artist of the month 2 times in a row! This
is also due to the great news of a new release from these guys coming out real
soon. and, due the fact the we just got their story out late. Things have been
rather hectic 'round here as we prepare to transition the site into it's new
form and slightly altered purpose. So these guys are also the last featured
artist on the site that you know now. Anyway, they guys gave a wonderful and
witty interview, that I'm sure you'll enjoy. So get to reading it! Kim: You guys have a very unique sound, is your song writing a group effort or do you have a primary song writer. Stewart: Different songs come about in different ways. Generally, one of us comes up with an interesting progression or riff and whoever's around will pick it up. Spencer writes most of the lyrics cuz none of the rest of us kin spel rite. Spencer: like he said. Glenn: exactly Kim: Who wrote "It got you thinking"? (my personal favorite, from what I've heard) Stewart: Spencer Spencer: me Glenn: No, bullshit. i did Kim: How's the new album shaping up? Do you have an approximate release date? Stewart: We're setting up some CD releases here in Austin for mid-December and hoping to get it online by the beginning of the year. Spencer: We are also hoping to have the record in many stores in the U.S. and Europe in the early spring. Glenn: Please listen to it three times before you give it back. Kim: Do you have any plans on touring in support of it's release? Stewart: Absolutely. Lock up your daughters and hide your bacon. Spencer: Why do they have to lock up their daughters ? Stewart: Who else is going to cook the bacon? Glenn: We actually have no idea. wait, we do have some ideas but no money. yes. that's it. are we being colorful? Kim: You guys are regular attendee's at SXSW (music conference), Would you recommend other "Colorful" artist's in checking it out? (if so, why?) Stewart: SXSW is a great opportunity for any band. We've been playing it for the last three years and have made more good contacts and friends than would have otherwise been possible. Sign up early and don't forget to wear black. Spencer: It's definitely a learning experience. I think if anyone comes here to play the conference without any expectations then they'll leave with something positive. Glenn: I can't stand crowds. I hate lines. I'm allergic to smoke. Kim: Also, Austin is legendary for it's underground music scene. A band like yourselves does give that rumour some merit. However, what is real and what is hype? Stewart: What's real IS the hype. Austin is just like any other town with live music, only moreso. Spencer: I don't think any of it is very "real". and besides, the moment something is too well known, it's not underground anymore, and you're always going to get those people who say "they sold out" or "I liked them better when they were underground". The truth is, success, even on a very small level, is the only thing that's really going to keep a band together. Glenn: Big business is ruining the music scene . Shot bars are taking over. music clubs are getting sqeezed out. there's a u in squeezed. Kim: O.k. you know we have to ask, why 54 seconds? Stewart: "54 firsts" didn't do so well in the test demographic. Too alliterative. Spencer: neither did "54 facetious bastards with mothers who teach English" Glenn: They never told me Kim: We all enjoy Stewarts vocal style. Does he have any formal training, or is he simple a natural? Stewart: Potty trained, yes but other than that, he's naturally a simple. Spencer: I'm glad someone finally picked up on his vocal style, because he's usually complaining he can't hear himself. The man's incredible. I was hesitant to join this band until I heard him sing. Then I knew all the pieces had come together. Glenn: I don't know what to say. Kim: And lastly, any advice for new bands that wish to pursue the true rock sound, like yourselves? Stewart: First off, ask yourself what is the "true rock sound". When you've found out what THAT is, play something else. Spencer: I find that rocks really require a good polishing before you can truly hear them. Glenn: Be true to yourself. sounds simple, doesn't it. that's why everyone's doing it.ha ha ha ha. email: Kim@colorfulmusic.com |
